Australia’s best outback experience – and best kept secret

What do you do when you’ve just spent 6 days in the Simpson Desert on your own, and driven over every one of those 600 million sand dunes by yourself? If you’re in Birdsville you go straight to the pub of course. For a celebratory glass of bubbly. A shower can wait for another hour …

Simpson Desert, part 6

Day 6. 473k into the desert Wanting to savour the morning I woke early and sat up in the swag, watching the sky lightening and listening to the birds greeting the day. The number and variety of birds out here is amazing. And gorgeous song birds. The mornings really are the best time of day …

Top five places to (re)visit in Australia

One of the best things about going on holidays is thinking about where to go. And while doing that, looking back on where you have been. Should I go somewhere completely new? Or go back to somewhere I really enjoyed before? Parachilna or Woomera? Uluru via Oodnadatta, or the Simpson? Australia is such a vast …

The real Waltzing Matilda

Update: My apologies, it seems I had the wrong information. Christina McPherson wasn’t Banjo Patterson’s fiance. The story is much more interesting than that. Christina’s friend, Sarah Riley, was engaged to Banjo Patterson, and had been for eight years. Right up until he met Christina and collaborated with her on Waltzing Matilda. The engagement was broken …

The Corner Store: where all the kangaroos hang out

I’m sitting at the Corner Store. Not the one down the street from home, the one at Cameron Corner, where three states meet: New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia. I’m not sure which state I’m in, or should that be what state I’m in. And I drove the Strzelecki and Old Strzelecki tracks to …

Where to see kangaroos in Australia

Kangaroos, koalas, wombats, echidnas, platypus(es??? – platypodes?), emus, wallabies, and more kangaroos. Everyone loves Australian animals. What’s not to love – they’re cute, cuddly, and they sleep in the shade all day – or swim in the case of platypus. And as long as they’re not spiders, snakes or crocodiles, or octopuses or some fish, …

Can you travel Australia without a 4WD?

I was driving down the motorway from Sydney to Wollongong the other day, playing tag with a Nissan Patrol. (that’s not it in the photo, that’s our Cruiser). Now that’s a fairly large 4WD vehicle, and it had all the travelling accoutrements. Camping gear on top, jerry cans for water/fuel, offroad tyres, etc. And it …

Australia’s best camping spots – part 2

Part 2 of my favourite camping spots in Australia. While writing this I realised that most of my favourite places to camp are in Queensland. Given the beauty and variety of the landscape in Queensland this probably isn’t surprising (and I haven’t camped anywhere in Western Australia). So here are the next three best places …

Australia’s best camping spots

You have amazing, magical experiences camping that you just can’t get if you stay in motels. I’m one of those people who used to turn her nose up at camping. Too uncomfortable, not enough basic amenities (ie toilets), dirty, too many insects, and too uncomfortable. Yes, I know I said that twice, but really, camping …

Where to find good travel information

How do you find out about a place that you’re visiting? The obvious place is visitors’/tourist centres, or on line. A number of places even have their own apps giving out information on what’s happening and what to see. Google “Sydney tourist information” and you get 30,200,000 hits. How helpful is this really?
