Who is really getting all that social security?

This is a decidedly political blog. My new year’s wish this year was for a kinder, gentler facebook. I was sick of posts that just fed hatred for particular groups or even individuals. Unfortunately, during the Australian election it seems to be getting worse. So I’m going to go out on a limb here – …

Are Adelaide waiters becoming as rude as in Sydney?

I’ve just been in Adelaide for my sister’s birthday. Whenever I’m there we go out to wineries, drinks, festivals and for meals. Normally it’s fantastic, Adelaide does these things very well, but a couple of incidents make me think Adelaide is catching the rude Sydney waiter disease.

Mexican bean soup

Here’s my recipe for the Mexican Bean Soup I made on the weekend and tweeted about. Even though I have a lot of cookbooks I don’t generally use recipes. Rather, I read recipes then make things up as I go along based on the basic ingredients. The quantities in this are not exact but the …

Lovedale Long Lunch

“You can’t go in there – they’re the disabled toilets.” Apart from the poor grammar, there are lots of arguments about whether “disabled” toilets are for disabled people only, or whether they’re toilets that anybody – including those in a wheelchair – can access. But there was no discussion at the Lovedale Long Lunch, and …

Can you find your soul mate on the internet?

Have you ever tried internet dating? I ask because every time I turn on the television it seems I’m bombarded with ads for a certain company that promises to match you up with your soul mate.  Apart from the obvious question of how they would be able to come up with a computer program that …

Jumping out of a plane and other fun things to do on your birthday

The outdoorsy one and I jumped out of a plane last night. From 14,000 feet. In the dark. And it was amazing. We weren’t alone. We each had an experienced parachutist from Skydive the Beach strapped to our back, and they had parachutes strapped to their backs, so it was perfectly safe.

Bad landlord stories

I bet every renter has a bad landlord story! I have rented for all of my adult life, apart from a short time as a property owner during my first marriage. Over that period, as you can imagine, I have had some good landlords and some bad ones. When my kids were still at school …

The road much less travelled

I went out to practice my 4wding yesterday – getting ready for my next trip outback. At least, that was the intention when we started out. I had a photo shoot on the NSW south coast, so Doc decided to come along as my assistant and then take me out for a 4wding lesson afterwards. …

Melbourne – setting trends for city living

When I go travelling it’s normally off the beaten track, somewhere in the great Australian outback. This time I’m in Melbourne, and it’s a revelation. Like all Sydneysiders I know Melbourne isn’t as good as people who live there think it is. It’s cold and grey, rains all the time, and it’s boring. So why …
