Flood or drought

I promised I’d put up some before and after photos of the Murrumbidgee River. This is what it looked like a couple of months before Christmas. This is one of the photos I have for sale on canvas, and one that I get a lot of comments on. It’s a farmgate beside the Murrumbidgee near …

Sunrise on the beach, with just the birds and the fishermen

Sunrise at Australia's best kept secret beach

I love mornings. When I can get out of bed that is. Even at the beach in summer you can have time and space to yourself. Even the sun puts on a great show for you.

Life’s highways and by ways

Our drive home from the farm takes us along the Hume Highway. Driving along the highway I spend a lot of time looking out the window. There are lots of things of interest right next to the highway, but somehow they don’t really grab my attention. By that I mean that not once have I …

Fish & chips for dinner … and feeding the birds

Remember all those summer holidays when you were a kid?  It doesn’t matter where you went for your holidays, it was always fish & chips for dinner. And now it’s the same with the kids and grandkids – fish & chips for dinner by the water in summer. Of course, feeding the birds is all …

The pick of the pics

A picture tells a thousand words, so here’s the story of our Christmas at the farm – from arriving in the golden glow of sunset, Christmas lights and Christmas beetles, millions of grasshoppers, Doc building his country shed, and all the rest [slideshow]

A sky full of stars in country NSW

You don’t get skies like these in the city. A week ago there was a full moon, last night there was none at all, leaving the stars to shine in all their brilliance. You can even see the Milky Way. And I was lucky enough to capture one shooting star amongst the many I saw …

Go west young family, and avoid the traffic

We’re back on the farm. And after reading about the traffic heading north (or at least stuck on the Pacific Highway facing north), I’m glad we come this way. Heading west there were very few other cars on the road, and definitely no traffic jams.

A weekend with The Outdoorsy One

The Outdoorsy One came down to stay for the weekend. She was missing her mum and wanted to hang out. So we did. Saturday was a beautiful day. We got up and sat in the sun having breakfast. I made spiced ricotta, raspberry and hazelnut muffins, which we had with real coffee and champagne (well …

When the fog lifts, it makes way for spring

Spring is definitely on the way, even if the weather doesn’t always feel like it. The seasons seem to be more marked out in the country, perhaps because you’re surrounded by nature. We woke up Saturday morning, the fire in the room had gone out and I was cold. It was early enough for the …
