Uluru – up close and personal

The first thing you notice (well, the first thing I noticed) about Uluru is it’s not in the desert. Not desert like you expect in central Australia anyway. Driving along the highway to Uluru we were surprised by how green everything is. It’s flat country, and grass and shrubs abound. There are even tall trees …

Oops, I’m bogged (again)

We’re stuck! We drove 113ks down the Old Ghan Track from Alice to Finke and all was fine. Then we got off the road, crossing the race track to set up camp and that’s when it happened. Bogged in sand! It was my own fault. As the track was firm I hadn’t let my tyre …

I admit it – I’m a bogan!

Ok, I admit it, I’m a bogan. First the Grand Prix, now Finke. What’s next V8 Supercars? Well, now that you mention it … they are on in Darwin next week. Of course, I wouldn’t go to Darwin just for the cars, but it is warm up there ….

Finke Desert Race 2013 – Photo gallery

My apologies for the number of photos in this gallery. There’s a few reasons for so many photos: I haven’t edited them. It’s difficult to see the laptop screen properly when you’re sitting in the sun, so I’ve just picked what I thought looked OK. Doc’s a HUGE Finke fan, and this is how he’s …

East MacDonnell Ranges – Photogallery 1

We’ve made it to Alice Springs, after 5 days travelling through the East MacDonnell Ranges, out of telephone and internet access. Time to just relax and enjoy the scenery. And enjoy it we did. The east MacDonnell Ranges is a beautiful place. With few tourists it is very peaceful and you can always find somewhere …

Just how adventurous are we? Or how much trouble do we want to get in?

We’re at Ross River Resort in the East McDonnell Ranges and contemplating a drive down to N’Dhala Gorge tomorrow. There’s a few “ifs”. IF it doesn’t rain overnight (it’s now cloudy and very cold). And IF I decide that I can get through the first lot of water (already quite deep). I’ll decide in the …

The smell of the Australian outback

Popcorn! The Northern Territory smells of popcorn. Driving across the border from Queensland of course we had to get out of the car and take the obligatory photo under the “Welcome to the NT” sign. That the setting sun was behind the sign made it even better. If only there was a brolga flying across! …

Getting into trouble … or just another adventure

We had our first trouble yesterday. About 140k into the 400km from Winton to Boulia the car started to lose power. “Uh, oh” I thought “We could be in trouble”

On the road less travelled

When I’m travelling I like driving on smaller roads rather than main highways. The occasional people you see always wave and you get some magnificent sights, particularly the abundance of birds and animals. Here’s a short video of our drive from Blackall to Longreach via Isisford and Ilfracombe in outback Queensland. Enjoy!
