I came for a few days, and stayed for nearly 3 months.
What is it about Broome? It seems to be a common story. People come for a couple of weeks or months, or even for a season, and never leave again. Broome draws you in.
I left Broome feeling freer within myself than when I arrived. And it’s thanks to the wonderful women I met while I was there.
They were all fabulous – friendly, supportive, fun. We danced, we laughed, we cried. We went camping. We went on retreats. We watched sunsets and sunrises. Lay back and looked at stars. Drank champagne.
I’ve been welcomed to people’s homes and country. I’ve listened to their stories and shared some of my own. I’ve discovered (or rediscovered) things about and within myself that I didn’t know (or forgot) were there.
If this is all sounding a bit woo woo, hippyish, well, that’s Broome.
I feel like I’ve become almost a local in the time I’ve been here. I’ve made some good friends, taken part in local events, and either walk or catch the bus everywhere. I even know the bus route and timetable, and can find my way around without google maps.
If it wasn’t that I wanted to go and see more of the Kimberely I would still be there. But the Gibb River Road beckons
Highlights
- Silent Beats on Cable Beach. It is so much fun to put on those headphones and dance along Cable Beach at sunset with the girls. Ditto in the early morning.
- Staircase to the moon. Sitting by the beach, watching the full moon come up and reflect a ‘staircase’ on the rippled sand at low tide was better than I was expecting. Then heading back to the market to some amazing stalls, and dance to some great local music made it a great night.
- Movies at Sun Pictures. It really doesn’t matter what you see, just grab a beanbag, lie down on the grass at the front with your popcorn and champagne, and watch the stars while you’re watching the movie.
- Getting a hairdresser and nail technician. It’s been a while since I’ve been to the same hairdresser or nail technician more than once. That’s one of the trade-offs you make when travelling constantly, but having been settled here for a while I’ve almost established myself as a regular client.
- Sunset at Gantheume Point. Sunsets here are stunning, and driving on to the sand at Gantheume Point, setting up with drinks and nibbles, having a swim and watching the sunset is magic. Though watch out for the seagulls. I turned my back for just a second and they stole our cheese. Almost a whole wheel of triple cream brie, and a big chunk of cheddar!
- Swimming in the boom net off the back of a charter to look for snub fin dolphins once, and whales another time. We saw them both times
There is so much more. Walking along the beach at low tide looking at all the life that’s usually covered by water. The Courthouse Markets every weekend and night markets at Town Beach every Thursday night. Sunday sesh at Matsos. Cocktails at the Mangrove. Drag bingo at the Roey.
As someone once said “I will be back”.
