Two Sheilas in a Ute – we’re off again!

1-O003Planning is underway for the next great Two Sheilas in a Ute outback adventure.
Helen has another couple of months off work, so we’re heading out. This time most likely to Uluru.
I say most likely, because one of the objectives of the trip is to get out of the cold, and believe me, it gets cold at Uluru in June!
So far we have a number of mix and match options:

  1. Along northern NSW through Tibooburra to Camerons Corner, or
  2. Along southern Queensland, through Cunnamulla and Eulo (for a mud bath) then down to Cameron Corner

Both of those would then take us to either:

  1. Up the Strzelecki, through Innamincka to Haddon Corner, Birdsville, Boulia and across to Alice Springs, then down to Kings Canyon, Uluru, Kata Tjuta, across to Finke and up the Old Ghan track back to Alice Springs; or
  2. Down the Strezelecki , around the bottom of Lake Eyre and up the Oodnadatta Track, then up the Old Ghan track to Finke, across to Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon and Alice Springs

A long way from anywhereFrom Alice Springs we’re going up to Tennant Creek, Barkly Homestead, Wollogorang and across to Gulf country – Burketown (barra capital of Australia and the only place Doc caught a barra on our Cape trip), Normanton and Karumba. Unfortunately we’ll be too early for a morning glory so that will have to wait until another time!

Another option we have is to cut out the NT section all together, and head straight up to the Gulf from Birdsville. That way we miss the cold, but we also miss seeing the centre. Life is full of trade offs.

I’m open to suggestions.

If you know of any festivals, events or celebrations up that way at the time we’ll be there, let me know. We’ll be too late for the Julia Creek Dirt & Dust Festival, but in time for the Finke Desert Race.

I’ll even offer a prize for the best suggestion that we take up

.Tell me where we should go and why, including what I should photograph. I’ll take an amazing photo of your suggestion, print it on high quality photo paper (poster size) and send it to you anywhere in the world. It will be exclusively yours.

We’re leaving mid May, so all suggestions need to be in by the end of April. I can’t wait to hear what you’ve got to say! Leave your suggestions in the comments section below, or contact me direct

  2. One of the best experiences of my travels was attending the Camel races in Bedourie, held a week before those in Boulia (which were washed out the year we went!). Towns east of Birdsville also have festivals/events leading up to the Birdsville races to capture the tourists heading for Birdsville – Quilpie, for example, although I don’t know all the details. I’d like to see pix of some of these lesser known events!
