Sunset, full moon and a big campfire

This is my favourite part of the day. I’m the only one up and it’s very peaceful. I’ve thrown a few twigs onto the remains of last night’s fire and brought that back to life. The coffee pot is sitting on the coals, there are crimson rosellas in the tree watching me, and a swallow …

Kakadu dreaming

There are a few places on this earth that just hearing the name conjures up magic. Kakadu is one of those places. It’s also the place where I’ve had one of the scariest experiences of my travels with Doc, as well as one of the most romantic.

A few of my favourite things

As somebody who travels a lot in Australia, I often get asked “where’s the best place to for …”, so here are a few of my favourite things. One of my favourite places to see all of these things is the farm in rural NSW that we go to to get away from the world. …

Camping is the most romantic way to go on holidays

It’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow, and what better way to celebrate than camping. Have a candlelit dinner, snuggle up by the fire, and look at a million stars above you. What could be better? Seriously. Camping is both romantic and sexy.

Six things you need to know before traveling in Australia

Neighbours, Home & Away, Crocodile Dundee, Mad Max. The Sydney Opera House, Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef, Bondi Beach. Where do people get their ideas about Australia, and how does that match with reality when they get here? If you think there’s no such thing as a stupid question, you haven’t heard some of the …

Out camping with wombats

“I miss being able to squat behind a behind a bush.” That’s a phrase I certainly never thought I’d say, but somehow on the weekend it popped out of my mouth. Yes, we went camping. And it was a different experience.

Can you travel Australia without a 4WD?

I was driving down the motorway from Sydney to Wollongong the other day, playing tag with a Nissan Patrol. (that’s not it in the photo, that’s our Cruiser). Now that’s a fairly large 4WD vehicle, and it had all the travelling accoutrements. Camping gear on top, jerry cans for water/fuel, offroad tyres, etc. And it …

Australia’s best camping spots – Part 3

Part 3, and the final instalment, in my favourite camping places. And none of these are in Queensland. I know a lot of people think of “Outback Australia” as the Northern Territory, but it extends across all states (except Tasmania). While I’m still trying to get to South Australian and Western Australia, I can promise …

Australia’s best camping spots – part 2

Part 2 of my favourite camping spots in Australia. While writing this I realised that most of my favourite places to camp are in Queensland. Given the beauty and variety of the landscape in Queensland this probably isn’t surprising (and I haven’t camped anywhere in Western Australia). So here are the next three best places …
